How large is the 401k market?

Answer: According to the Investment Company Institute, the 401k market is estimated to be $1.712 trillion in assets at year-end 2000 (latest data available). This represents approximately 15 percent of the $11.5 trillion U.S. retirement market. Assets in 401k plans have increased on average 18 percent per year, from $385 billion in 1990. According to estimates by Cerulli Associates, there were 303,893 401k plans at the end of 1999 and about 39.3 million 401k plan participants. In 1990, there were 97,614 401k plans and 19.5 million active 401k plan participants.
