Can't Find A Card For This National Holiday? You Are Not Alone
MILWAUKEE, August 21, 2002 - Which national holiday celebrated in the fall involves dressing up, handing out treats and scaring yourself about the future-and it isn't Halloween? If you don't know, you are not alone. In a recent survey conducted by Strong Retirement Plan Services, 83.5% of those surveyed were not aware of National 401k Day and 96.9% did not know when it was. So, when is National 401k Day? As retirement follows work, 401k Day is the day after Labor Day every year. This year National 401k Day will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 3.
What are companies doing to celebrate the day? At Nissan Forklift Corporation in Marengo, Illinois, the 450 workers in this $15 million plan will celebrate 401k Day in style. The company will host a "Dress For Retirement" day, provide on-site 401k education, and take full advantage of their 401k provider's offer of free materials to help them celebrate 401k Day.
"We began the 'Dress For Retirement' day a few years ago and it has been a hit with our employees ever since," says Barbara Gray, Manager of Human Resources at Nissan Forklift. "We have a lot of fun with the day. People come dressed in fishing gear, gardening boots and kneepads, their favorite travel attire, or, as someone did last year, as a 'Millionaire-in-Training.' One of the primary reasons we partner with Strong as our 401k provider is their outstanding educational support and materials like their announcements, decorations, posters, treats, and handouts for getting the word out about our 401k Day celebration."
Each year Strong Retirement Plan Services offers a communications kit or "401k Day-In-A-Box" to help their plan sponsors celebrate. The theme this year is "Destination: Retirement." Strong provides 401k Day materials as part of their award-winning* ongoing education services. "A 401k Day celebration is an easy way to promote the plan, get people talking about the plan's benefits, and increase participation and deferral rates," says Elli Dai, Vice President of Strong Retirement Plan Services.
National 401k Day was started by the Profit Sharing/401k Council of America, a Chicago-based nonprofit association advocating increased retirement security through profit sharing, 401k, and related defined contribution programs. 401k Day is an annual celebration spotlighting the importance of employer-sponsored profit sharing and 401k plans.
